Franck Conte — Matter as an Abstract Language

Franck Conte, also known as FrkConte, is a French painter based in Marseille. At the heart of his practice, abstraction brings together the force of gesture, the depth of colour and the physical presence of materials.

His discovery of American Abstract Expressionism during adolescence proved formative. The freedom of Action Painting and the spontaneity of abstract calligraphy informed his early explorations, which he further developed through fine art training. Over time, he established a personal visual language in which traces, signs and rhythms leave room for the viewer’s own response.

Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, Conte builds his paintings through successive layers. Fields of colour, translucent passages, drips and raised textures create surfaces that alternate between density and openness. Colour reveals certain layers while concealing others; light brings out the irregularities of the surface, continually shifting the experience of the work.

His engagement with urban art and post-graffiti also feeds his abstract practice. Weathered walls offer a vocabulary of accumulated marks, erosion and overlapping histories. In the studio, this energy becomes compositions in which gestural freedom meets a carefully considered balance.

Presented notably at Galerie Secrets d’Artistes in Honfleur, his abstract work rewards sustained attention. His paintings appeal to collectors drawn to expressive intensity, richly layered surfaces and the freedom to discover their own meanings within an image.
