Maria de Campos

Born in Portugal in 1977, Maria De Campos is a contemporary visual artist who currently lives and works in the Drôme region of France. After studying for three years at the Valence School of Fine Arts, she developed a distinctive artistic language shaped by visual culture, popular imagery and the contemporary media landscape.

At the crossroads of Pop Art, Street Art and Expressionism, her practice focuses primarily on iconic portraiture. Major figures from art, cinema, music and fashion appear in vibrant compositions through which the artist revisits and deconstructs the familiar images embedded in our collective memory.

Maria De Campos works mainly with mixed media, combining painting, collage, fragments of text and textured materials. Through layering, accumulation and contrast, she fragments her subjects before reconstructing them in a dynamic visual language. Raw colour and spontaneous gestures give her paintings an urban energy, while a sense of poetry and melancholy emerges beneath their expressive intensity.

Beyond paying tribute to celebrated cultural figures, the artist questions our relationship with images, fame and the symbols that shape the way we see the world. Often presented frontally, her portraits establish a direct connection with the viewer and offer a more intimate, contemporary perspective on familiar faces. Exhibited in galleries in France and internationally, her work transforms popular imagery into an experience that is both personal and universal.
